Job summary:


The University and Careers Counselor is responsible for:


- The guidance and support of students through the

process of application to institutions of higher education

The Student Counselor is expected to:

- Counsel students (and their parents)

- Direct and support teachers in dealing with students

who are facing challenges

- Support teachers in the delivery of aspects of the

pastoral curriculum

- Support the curricular integration of the pastoral

curriculum


Skills and Qualifications:


  • Qualified International Education or Counseling degree (Master’s preferred)

  • Fluent in English

  • Experience in an international school context is essential

  • Two years minimum as University and Careers Counselor

  • Two years minimum as Student Counselor

  • Commitment to ongoing IB and other professional development

  • Willingness to develop and promote a growing school, staff, and student

  • body

  • Experience in an international school context is essential

  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion in addition to adapting and

  • developing pedagogy

  • Sense of humor


Specific Responsibilities:


University and Careers Counselor


Lead specific initiatives:


The University and Career Counselor is expected to:


- Collaborate with the Principal and the IB DP Coordinator to lead specific initiatives in the

University Counseling area.

- Meet on a regular basis with the Principal and/or Deputy Principal.


Curriculum related:


The University and Career Counselor is:


- Responsible for developing the written (pastoral) curriculum related to student career

pathways and choices.


Student Related:


The University and Careers Counselor is expected to:


- Work with the DP Coordinator and the Principal to lead the delivery of the careers-related

curriculum

- Provide assistance to students and parents in the area of applications to institutions of

higher and further education globally.

- Be responsible for advising students about careers and institutions of higher and further

education globally and for helping them arrive at realistic decisions on these matters.

- Be responsible for working with the DP Coordinator and teachers to track student

achievement and ensure that each student applying for a course is in line to achieve their

goal.

- Advise students and parents on application procedures for institutions of higher

education.

- Organize and host visits from groups and individual representatives from institutions of

higher education, with regard to careers and choices for higher education.

- Ensure that the library has an adequate and up to date supply of books and other

materials relating to higher and further education.

- Prepare references for students applying for courses in further education.

- Keep up to date of potential scholarship opportunities and support students in

scholarship applications.

- Arrange interview training for students applying to universities that conduct interview

processes.

- Be available to students and parents to give appropriate advice when the IB results are

published.


Student Counselor:


Counseling Responsibilities:


The Student Counselor is expected to:


- Provide personal counseling for students relating to emotional, social and academic

concerns

- Evaluate referred students with social/emotional/behavioural problems which affect

optimal academic progress

- Work with staff to create conditions in which individual students can develop their

potential, and achieve a personal sense of worth and mastery

- Design and deliver development and short-term intervention programs for individuals

and groups of students

- Identify, support and ensure the safety of ‘at-risk students’ (including maintaining a

register of these students)

- Advocate for students (specific needs for individuals or more general student-body

concerns)

- Provide knowledge, skills and opportunities to enable students to become sufficiently

empowered, in order to make healthy choices for themselves

- Provide expertise to parents and staff in developing relationships and communication

with students

- Develop and maintain sustainable programs that involve students in creating a

supportive environment in the school.

- Connect with support systems outside of school (e.g., therapists, etc.)


Leading Learning:


The Student Counselor is expected to:


- Teach lessons related to the pastoral program

- Collaborate with Homeroom teachers to facilitate and support the teaching of the

pastoral curriculum

- Organise parent information workshops/education sessions and other counseling related

events as appropriate

- Serve as a resource and provide advice to staff on child and adolescent development and

social, emotional and behavioural issues

- Collaborate with others to deliver professional development programs for staff according

to identified needs


Communication:


The Student Counselor is expected to:

- Consult with parents and provide them with support and information as appropriate

- Serve as a liaison between the school, home, and outside agencies to which the student

may be referred to for additional assistance

- Work as a member, and communicate effectively various teams

- Work collaboratively with the medical team

- Work closely with the Principal, Deputy Principal, and Program Coordinators to share

relevant student development and intervention information.


General:


The role is expected to:


- Attend meetings throughout the year outside the school core day if required.

- Support community related activities in the promotion of the ‘life of the school’.

- Provide support for other activities as deemed appropriate by the Principal within the

scope of responsibilities as University and Careers Counselor and Student Counselor.

- Any other duties that may, from time to time, reasonably be required within the general

level of responsibility of the post.

If you are employed full-time, your duties per week are:


  • 2 hours of extra duties, e.g. mentoring a student for their Personal Project,

  • Extended Essay, and individual student support

  • Offer parents meetings (online or face-to-face)

  • Professional Development/Further training, if offered by/and paid by the

  • school (can be done also in your free time)

  • Attend school conferences

  • 24 hours of substitution for sick colleagues per year
