Description of Position:


Senior School Personal Counsellor (0.5 FTE)

Senior School - Grades 10-12

Temporary Position


Southpointe is seeking an experienced, collaborative and qualified Personal Counsellor or Registered Social Worker whose experience reflects a commitment to student wellness and the importance of social-emotional learning. Reporting to the Director of Student Support Services and also working closely with the Senior School Principal, the Senior School Counsellor position will commence August 27, 2021 for the 2021-2022 school year.



Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide personal, social and academic skills counselling to individual and small groups, both scheduled and drop-in;

  • Foster caring, committed and supportive relationships with students and families;

  • Create an environment that promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect and care;

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to support student wellness across the school; Model a strong work ethic and high standard of commitment;

  • Maintain the highest level of professionalism in all interactions; uphold the Legal and Ethical Guidelines established by the BC School Counsellor Association;

  • Maintain confidentiality, informed consent, disclosure and confidential record keeping as per BC Schools Counsellors Association guidelines;

  • Assist teachers to work well with students who require social and emotional support;

  • Assist in mediation and conflict resolution;

  • Assist students in closing the gap and removing barriers, when possible between mental health and/or socio-emotional challenges, and academic achievement;

  • Design, prepare and deliver learning experiences that facilitate authentic engagement on the topics of health and social-emotional learning alongside other members of the Student Support team;

  • Maintain and share information on related topics to faculty, students, and parents;

  • Make referrals to and work cooperatively with external agencies (e.g., Community Services, Public Health, Child Protection);

  • Participate in community building events, both in and out of school hours;

  • Work collaboratively with Division Principals and Safe School Coordinators to carry out risk and crisis assessments.


Southpointe educators offer co-curricular activities for students by either devising their own programmes or participating in the school’s Athletics offerings throughout the three different sporting seasons.



Essential Qualifications:


  • Graduate level training in Counselling Psychology, Social Work, School Counselling, or equivalent training with a focus on personal counselling;

  • Registered Clinical Counsellor or Registered Social Worker (or eligibility to register);


Preferences:


  • Bachelor of Education or Equivalent;

  • BC Ministry of Education: Certificate of Qualification or Independent School Teaching Certificate;

  • Member of the BC School Counsellor Association;

  • At least 1-2 years experience working in a high school setting;

  • Valid First Aid Certificate.
