Southpointe is also an official Candidate School for the IB Diploma Programme (Grade 11-12), which will complete its innovative offering of IB from entry to graduation. The educational programme is supported through modern, purpose-built facilities and amenities. Southpointe is seeking an energetic, outgoing and collaborative counsellor who shares a commitment to providing social emotional support for students. Reporting to the Junior School Principal, the Junior School Counsellor position will commence August 26, 2022 for the 2022-2023 school year. The year groups is from Kindergarten to grade 5 and it is a permanent position.




Key Duties and Responsibilities *These may include, but are not limited to...

  • Provide personal, social and academic skills counselling to individual and small groups of students,

  • both scheduled and drop in

  • Foster caring, committed and supportive relationships with students and families

  • Create an environment that promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect and care

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to support student wellness across the school

  • Model a strong work ethic and high standard of commitment

  • Maintain the highest level of professionalism in all interactions; uphold the Legal and Ethical Guidelines established by the BC School Counsellor Association

  • Maintain confidentiality, informed consent, disclosure and confidential record keeping as per BC Schools Counsellors Association guidelines

  • Assist teachers to work well with students who require social and emotional support, both in and out of the classroom setting

  • Assist in mediation and conflict resolution

  • Work closely with the Junior School Principal to manage highly sensitive and confidential situations that may involve the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development

  • Assist students with mental health, socio-emotional challenges, and/or academic difficulties

  • In collaboration with classroom teachers and the Student Support Centre, design, prepare and deliver classroom lessons that facilitate authentic engagement on the topics of health and social-emotional learning

  • Maintain and share information on related topics to faculty, students, and parents

  • Make referrals to and work cooperatively with external agencies (e.g., Community Services, Public Health, Child Protection)

  • Participate in community building events, both in and out of school hours

  • Work collaboratively with Division Principals and Safe School Coordinators to carry out risk and crisis assessments which may include assistance outside of posted school hours. Southpointe educators offer co-curricular activities for students by either devising their own programmes or participating in the school’s Athletics offerings throughout the three different sporting seasons


Essential Qualifications


  • Graduate level training in Counselling Psychology, Social Work, School Counselling, or equivalent training with a focus on personal counselling

  • Registered Clinical Counsellor or Registered Social Worker (or eligibility to register) Preferences

  • Bachelor of Education or Equivalent

  • BC Ministry of Education: Certificate of Qualification or Independent School Teaching Certificate

  • Member of the BC School Counsellor Association

  • At least 1-2 years experience working in an elementary setting

  • Valid First Aid Certificate
