Associate Head for Finance and Operations
United World College-USA seeks to appoint an Associate Head for Finance and Operations. This is a full-time, exempt, 12-month position reporting directly to the President.
The Associate Head for Finance and Operations oversees and maintains efficient and effective financial and operating systems and processes as well as exemplary service levels and accountability across the school’s core business and operations functions. The Associate Head for Finance and Operations continuously seeks to improve resource use through management of the business office, human resources, information technology, property management, legal affairs, insurance, plant and facilities maintenance and transportation, campus security, dining services, the campus store.
The Associate Head for Finance and Operations is a member of the Strategic Leadership Team (SLT) and collaborates to ensure the effective, safe, and mission-aligned/values-based operation of UWC USA.
The ideal applicant will have prior experience working in academe, and with international and or non-profit organization. Experience with the UWC movement is a plus.
Leadership: The Associate Head for Finance and Operations exercises leadership across the school through finance and operations program management; direct and indirect supervision of managers and directors; strategic planning; collaboration with the president, SLT, and board; work with students; and as a representative of the leadership team to all members of the UWC-USA community and beyond. Leads, coleads, or participates in various campus committees including the Operations, Sustainability, and Risk Management Committees and other committees as assigned, focusing the work of the committees in light of the school’s mission, values, and current strategic plan as well as staffing and budget considerations. Staffs the Audit, Facilities, Finance, and Investment Committees of the Board. The Associate Head for Finance and Operations actively develops and implements diversity, equity and inclusion policies, programs and protocols.
Ensures audits and statutory compliance are carried out on time and in line with applicable laws and UWC USA regulations and compliance requirements; arranges for the preparation of the audited financial reports by external auditors and review by the President, SLT and Board
Develops and maintains systems of internal controls to safeguard financial assets of the school; oversees the management of UWC USA assets and endowments, including tracking investment performance and providing financial statement analysis to the Board
Provides support to the board, president, SLT, and the Strategic Planning Task Force in the areas of planning and strategic financial management, budgetary analysis and reporting
Provides strategy for, and oversight of, the business office and its functions to ensure efficient and effective management and accuracy and reliability of financial information
Leads the budgeting process and provides relevant information to operating divisions and the president.
Produces financial, expense and budgeting reports
Oversees bond indebtedness and banking and auditing relationships
Liaises with UWCIO on financial data collection to support movement wide reporting and initiatives
Human Resources: Oversees human resource activities including but not limited to recruitment, selection and hiring, orientation, payroll and benefits, staff support and engagement, support for training and development, as well as employee benefits such as health, life, dental, FSA, and workers compensation.
Facilities: Directs and manages school facilities functions. Oversees the management of new construction, renovation, and non-routine maintenance. Brings a sustainability framework to all facilities strategies and decisions.
IT: Oversees and ensures effective use of Information Technology systems to support organizational processes, including document management, client relationship management, event support, mainframe computing, other administrative computing, and faculty and teaching equipment and technology. Establishes and maintains budget and cost management for IT.
Security: Oversees the security division to ensure the security of the campus and the safety of employees, students, and visitors.
Food Service: Oversees food services contract and works closely with the food services manager to ensure quality service to the UWC USA community while maintaining the approved budget and promoting sustainable practices.
Board: Staffs the Board’s Finance, Investment, Audit, and Facilities Committees.
SLT: Serves as a member of the Strategic Leadership team and contributes to the team’s efforts to promote an organizational culture of collaboration based on alignment with a common vision and the mission and values of UWC, open and frequent communication, adaptation, and celebration of success in achieving broader organizational objectives through various departmental projects.
Risk Management: Oversees Risk Management and property Insurance(s). Maintains oversight of legal issues and public safety. Serves as lead of the Risk Management Committee. Serves as the main contact for the school’s insurance companies. Serves as the main contact for the school on legal matters regarding the operations or financial responsibilities of the school.
As a member of the SLT, the Associate Head for Finance and Operations may be asked to help with advancement efforts including but not limited to contributions to grant and other fundraising preparations, presentation of key program initiatives, and donor meetings in which funding is being sought for their area.
Has other duties as required and assigned by the president.
Salary Range: $137,600 - $206,400
Office environment primarily, but with frequent visits to construction and non- routine maintenance sites.
Some evening and weekend work.
Some overnight travel.
Undergraduate degree in business, finance, or a related field.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
Experience in planning and overseeing capital projects.
Collaborative leadership style that includes strong team-building skills.
Commitment to the mission of the school and the UWC movement.
International and/or non-profit experience preferred.
Graduate degree in a related field (such as an MBA), or comparable experience of progressively evolving management and team leadership in an academic setting.
Experience working in schools and/or colleges.
This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt position. Compensation is commensurate with experience; and UWC-USA offers a competitive benefits package.
UWC-USA is an international boarding school. It enrolls up to 240 students in grades 11 and 12. All students follow the IB Diploma Program. Roughly twenty percent of the students come from the U.S.; the remainder represent more than 90 different countries. Students are admitted on the basis of merit, potential, and promise.
