Brief Description of School: Founded in 2009, International School of Hellerup is a not-for profit IB Continuum World School in Copenhagen offering IB Programmes from Pre-K - Grade 12. Description of Position:
We are looking for a pro-active, enthusiastic and experienced person to lead the Special Educational Needs Department with the Primary Years Programme, at International School of Hellerup. This person will be working within a team of within the Learning Support Services and will be liaising regularly with the department, teachers, management and the local Kommune in order to provide the best learning for our students. You will be required to act as a Learning Support Teacher (LST) for a significant part of your portfolio (50% or over), requiring the candidate to be well organised and motivated.
The successful candidate will:
Have a high fluency in written and spoken English as part of their Language Profile
Demonstrate strong communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills
Have relevant teaching qualifications (including Learning Support/Special Needs education) and proven coordination and teaching experience, preferably in an IB school
Have knowledge and/or experience of, and a commitment to, the educational philosophies of the International Baccalaureate, specifically the Primary Years Programme
Design, deliver and evaluate lessons which stimulate and motivate student learning
Work and plan in collaboration within curricular teams
Be caring and compassionate
Internationally minded mindset and competencies
Special Needs Coordinator – main responsibilities:
Organise testing and specialist support for students, e.g. speech therapy, tutoring, psychologist, Kommune assistance in collaboration with parents.
Manage referral process and regularly check for new referrals, collect further information from teachers if required.
Organise specialist learning support teacher or assistant to assist students with significant learning needs, this can be both one on one sessions, or group sessions.
Organise timetables for learning support teacher and assistants and prioritise support.
Organise the Learning support Services database where all accessible specialist services are recorded and form links with community groups which LSS students can access.
Organise testing times with the school psychologist and identify students of concern.
Provides staff professional development that focuses on supporting students with additional learning needs and differentiation.
Check that IEP’s and Action Plans are being implemented by class teachers and give feedback to whole staff on progress of LSS students.
To provide holistic care for all students in collaboration with Principal, EAL Coordinator and PYP Coordinator.
To understand the IB philosophy and to integrate it into Learning Support Services.
Collaborate with Admissions Counselor and psychologist to identify students with additional learning needs and determine approximate support required and give advice on grade level LSS enrollments.
Collaborate with School Psychologist and other external specialist to engage the PPR to work with specific students.
Collaborate with the school nurse to identify students with physical difficulties, e.g. hearing and eyesight.
Assist any student who needs emergency support when the school psychologist or other support teachers are unavailable.
Organising the development and restructuring of the LSS Department
