Description of School:
Liceo Pino Verde is a private bilingual school with high academic standards and a humanist approach to education. We have our certification as an IB School – Diploma Programme and in the process of getting the certification for the Primary Years Program.
Kids are accepted when they are 2-3 years old and the school offers all the grades through 11th grade, which is the last year in Colombian education. From K4 to 5th grade, students are in an English immersion program. We don´t teach English, we teach IN English: Math, Social Studies, Science and Language Arts. Depending on the grade, we also teach Arts, SPPE and ICT in English.
Most teachers working at LPV are Colombians who have learned English fluently and they do an amazing job. Having native speakers helps our students with their fluency, pronunciation, and knowledge and respect for other cultures. Because of this, LPV is always interested in hiring foreign teachers that are qualified to teach at our school.
The architecture of the school is outstanding: most classrooms are open-air and made of “guadua” (large form of bamboo). There are plenty of green areas, a swimming pool, and a “wild” tropical trail surrounding the school. That is just perfect to take the students for hands-on science experiences!
Most of the school starts classes in January and finish in early December. We have also some grades that start the school year in July and finish in June.
Description of Position:
The English Teacher is responsible of transmitting the required abilities and knowledges to enhance English communication. Needs to be open to the students´ requirements and necessities. You are also required to have literature knowledge; students need to be surrounded by diverse dynamics to meet the objectives stablished by the English department.
Know and work based upon Colombian Curriculum Standards as well as MYP curriculum and methodology.
Be a model to all students of the IB profile: inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk-takers, knowledgeable, principled, caring, open-minded, well-balanced, reflective.
Work as a team to plan and design activities to fulfill the Study Plans of the grade. Collaborative planning is a big part of the job.
Teach the main subject matters. This may vary depending on the grade you will be teaching.
Know how each one of your students learn and establish teaching strategies to reach all of them when planning all your classes and evaluating their learning.
One-on-one tutoring when necessary.
Maintain up to date the planning, attendance and grade platform.
Use technological tools to complement your teaching.
Attend conferences, activities or workshops that the school decides are important.
Evaluate constantly students’ academic, social, discipline progress and struggles.
Meet with parents, school directives and co-workers to discuss students’ progress.
Follow and contribute to the school´s Quality System (based on norm ISO 9001-2008).
Monitoring lunch and break – bus route duty
Any other obligations that arise with the position.
Parents are involved in many ways: we have a platform where they can check their kid’s assignments and grades on line. We expect parents´ attendance at least 4 times during the year (open house and 3 report meetings), and every time the homeroom teacher or the coordinator decide it is important to meet with them.
We believe that education is a process that involves parents and teachers and we try to work with parents as a team; this is a very important part of being a teacher at LPV. As in every school, we have concerned parents, we have stressed parents, we have full participants and unfortunately we also have parents that do not participate as much as we want, we will help you with those cases.
Monthly salary …………............. $2`321.000 Colombian pesos (bachelors) or $2`584.000 Colombian pesos (masters). 8% of this amount is taken out to pay for legal and mandatory health and pension plan.
Housing Bonus …….................. $ 650.000 Colombian pesos a month
“Prima” ……………………….… ½ salary ($1’160.500 - bachelors or $1’292.000 - masters) in December and ½ salary ($1´160.500 - bachelors or $1’292.000 - masters) in June. This is mandatory according to Colombian law.
Paid Health Emergency Service (a doctor goes to your house and it provides the basic care. If it is necessary, it will transport you to the clinic)
The school charges approximately $75.000 per month for lunch at our restaurant (includes snack and lunch) and $90.000 for transportation to school in our buses (if you live in Pereira).
“Cesantías”: at the end of the contract, Colombian law states that you get an extra salary ($2’321.000 - bachelors or $2`584.000 - masters) for every 12 months of work plus interest besides what we have mention above.
We will help with the VISA process and pay for it. We will also pay for the round trip ticket or part of it depending on the departure site / destination up to US$900.
If you decide to leave before the contract ends, you would have to reimburse the school for the VISA and flight expenses (proportional to the time remaining), as well as any investment the school has made for special training courses (if applies) – you would be notified before taking the course.
If you have dependants, the school will give a 90% discount in tuition fees.
